Sketch Awesome Course is created Phil Davis
I’ve committed myself to a one-year sketching course which, hopefully, will be awesome as the name suggests. Phil Davis had previously run Art Tutor website which was providing lots of various painting and drawing tutorials from various professional artists. It was very popular, from what I remember, and then the pandemic hit, and he announced the closure of Art Tutor and creating a new Draw Awesome website.
Sketch Awesome course is based on watching online/on demand tutorials each week and then completing assigned projects. Each week the focus is on different subject matter and using different art supplies to make it more interesting.
There is a bonus practice exercise each week and a periodic break week for having a catch-up if you fall behind or just have some rest. I really like how he teaches his students and, although the price of the course is a tad steeper than I would like, I think and hope it will be worth it.
The monthly payment was £25 and if you pay upfront it was £259 at the time I purchased it and I had an option to pay in multiple different currencies.
If you pay monthly, and you choose to stop after a few months, you will be losing access, but if you pay upfront you will have access till the website is alive. You do have the option to download all your classes though. You can’t sign yourself up for a course any time as it is based on “intakes” and if you wish to participate you need to put yourself on a waiting list and wait till the next intake is open. So far, he’s opened the course twice and, according to his website, the next intake might be in January 2025.
Sketch Awesome Extra Touch
You can buy Sketch Awesome sketchbooks as well, which I think is a very nice touch. Sketchbooks come as a pack of two and they cost £30. Worldwide shipping was free if I remember correctly. I received mine after a week of purchasing, but I live in the UK. You can’t at the moment buy sketchbooks separately only when you buy the course.
The second intake was opened for 7 days and about one month before the course actually starts, so they can make sure all sketchbooks are sent out and received on time. My course starts on 13th of May 2024 and intake was opened the week commencing 8th of April 2024.
You will also get access to Artkula if you wish to be part of a community.
Artkula
It’s free, you don’t need to purchase anything, and is open to anybody interested in art, regardless of age or drawing abilities.
The platform is truly community-spirited, never had any bad experiences and members are very supportive. The platform is getting better and better. There are lots of free resources, such as downloadable e-books or shorter video courses, each includes a few projects. You do have the ability to directly message Phil if you have any suggestions for improving the platform. It is clear, that Phil has put a lot of time and effort into making it a great place for everyone and I would highly recommend you to become a member.
