Project 17 – Van Gogh in Gouache
I found project 17 somehow challenging. I was battling with creating a texture and something I would visually like. On top of that, irises were very confusing for me to draw, and I got easily lost in all the lines. Overall, I learned quite a lot about handling paint and my appreciation for gouache versatility grew getting bigger.
This Week Project had two main and one bonus video:
Page 1 – Irises
The first two videos were about irises. I got so confused sketching the outline of irises that I decided to abandon more flowers and put plenty of leaves in my composition instead.
I was unable to create a lot of texture as well. First, it was sort of hard to create texture with gouache and secondly, I did not like it much.
Outlining in gouache was a new experience for me and I did enjoy it. For some strange reason, I found it very relaxing.
Page 2 – Bonus Video – Lemons
I was not super-duper keen on Van Gogh’s style, so I experimented with “my” style instead. I decided to use a masking technique for lemons and leave coming out of the frame and was super impressed with the end result, so for sure I will use this technique again in my next projects.
This week summary
- in case I have not mentioned it already enough, the more I use gouache, the more I love it
- I consider Royal Talens gouache great quality and value for money for learning to paint with gouache
- masking lemons with masking tape was a great technique to use
- I prefer “my” style to Van Gogh’s one
