Project 13 – Challenge 2
Free sketching was really refreshing after the last project failure. I opted for gouache, so I can practise more and have some relaxing fun as well. Project 13 was all about Something Precious to us. Thinking about what has meaningful significance for me, took more time than sketching it and I picked up four objects.
This Week Project had 30 secs video:
Page 1 – The Mug
Painted with white gouache and two different tones of red. For this one, I used an Uniball pen on top of gouache for lettering and even after a few days, the ink did not dry and smudged all over the white part of the mug. Black gouache and liner brush would be a better choice.
Page 2 – Other Precious Things
I was using Daler Rowney Aquafine Gouache for this page, and it was just awful. I would not recommend these gouache paints to anyone unless you fancy issues with colour mixing. Every time my colours came out very dull. Later, I had a look at the pigment information and each of them had titanium white mixed in. No wonder my colours were less than satisfying. After plenty of grief and struggle, I managed to paint the octopus to my liking at least.
This week summary
- gouache is a great medium to work with and loving various methods for blending
- never ever use DR Aquafine gouache, maybe only white and black
- Uniball pen is not a great idea to put on top of a gouache
