Sketch Awesome Project 11

Project 1 – Four Faces

And here we go again. Portraits. I don’t like them and want to avoid them as much as possible. I truly admire people who like them, but it may be that I don’t feel comfortable with them. Project 11 was focused on sketching four faces. However, we had the option to do only two of them. Maybe if I feel like it, I will give the other two a chance at some point.

Phil used four different coloured pencils for each face, but I decided to do something different and went to dip pen and ink with some brushwork just for fun.

This week project was split into 5 parts:

4x main, 1x further ideas video dedicated to a quick demo on shading

Part 1 – Oldish Gentleman Face

We were using the Loomis method, the same as on previous portraits. For some reason, I think that using Loomis is pointless as I had to adjust the man’s face so much that starting from scratch would be easier and less time-consuming. Using a dip pen and Frisk drawing ink was very satisfying to use. I went for a quick expressive mark making as well.

Part 2 – Youngish Woman Face

Persevere with the portraits and quickly sketched the woman’s face. Again I used a dip pen, but this time a Pelikan blue-black 4001 ink. I did not want to use the dip pen ink for her head covering and used a brush as a shortcut. In Phil’s video there was a little bit of Adrian Berenguer’s Little Things song and I fell in love with his music. It made me feel like I could do anything, and it became my drawing and painting music for now 🙂 . You can check his music on YouTube for free.

This week summary

  • I still don’t like portraiture and would rather sketch something else
  • dip pen is so much fun, especially the ones with flexible nibs which can be splayed to create wide lines
  • paper could take my harshness with the dip pen, which was nice to find out
  • finally have inspiring music to listen to while drawing/ painting – I find listening to podcasts distracting and could not find something to suit my needs
