Sketch Awesome Project 15

Project 15 – Hare

This week was about being loose and expressive but in a more controlled way than last week project. We used carbon pencil, a paper stump and watercolours. I used Mars Lumograph 5B pencil instead of a carbon pencil. It was not as dark and left some shiny spots on the paper. Apparently, if you use a carbon pencil, you can get dark almost close to charcoal, and it does not leave a shiny surface. I’ve learnt something new 🙂

This week project consisted of one main and one bonus video:

Part 1 – Hare

First we quickly sketched the hare, then applied carbon pencil residue/shaving with paper stump on paper and applied watercolour over it. At the end, we put some details back in and voila – the hare was born.

Nice technique to try, but not sure if I will do it again.

Part 2 – Bonus Chipmunk

Chipmunk was fun, and we did approach the sketching in a different order. First, we did the sketch, then watercolour, then paper stump, and then we added details. I think splattering was the best part of the process.

Both projects were done very quickly, which was nice and gave me the feeling of being super productive.

This week summary

• project 15 was messy. Carbon residue was all over my sketching hand
• need to put a resist paper between pages to avoid graphite transfer from one page to another
• can see why people would like the technique. It seems to be quick and multiple loose sketches can be done in a short period of time
• prefer the first method when watercolours were applied before the last step
• Mars Lumograph 5B pencil was surprisingly a joy to use
