Project 8 – Toucan
I love toucans. They are very colorful and always look happy. Project 8 was great fun and very good for practising colour mixing as well as blending techniques and layering.
This Week Project had three videos:
Page 1 – Toucan
Video1&2 was dedicated to a main painting of toucan. I wanted the main toucan to be painted in cool colours, just to see what can be achieved with a limited colour pallet. Instead of leaving a plain background, I was having fun with Bokeh effect. I did wet blending most of the time, just because I liked it, and I was very happy with his feet.
Page 2 – Further Ideas – More Birds
I painted another toucan but this time using warm colours, and it looks more natural, while the toucan done with cool colours has more illustrative qualities. The rest was a quick sketch with a BIC Blue classic pen. Even though there was a quick video of some of the bird sketches, I followed it very loosely.
This week summary
- gouache is a great medium to work with
- loving the wet blending, not taught in the tutorial, as I was able to create smooth blends
- prefer to work with warm colours for the end result however I don’t really like them individually
- biro pen sketches are fun
